Data Quality and Corrections
Every figure on this page is counted live from our database. It shows when each part of the data was last refreshed, how much of our coverage has each kind of data, which automated checks are currently open, and what we have corrected. We do not publish an accuracy rate: we have not yet measured our figures against issuers' own announcements in an independent audit, and we will not claim a number we have not measured.

What each security is
Every security is classified from its listing, its filings with the SEC and our data providers' records, so that lists described as common stocks contain only common stocks.
| Security type | Securities |
|---|---|
| Common stock | 1803 |
| American depositary receipt (ADR) | 279 |
| Preferred share | 179 |
| Closed-end fund | 169 |
| Exchange-traded fund | 63 |
| Exchange-traded note or baby bond | 55 |
| Trust unit | 8 |
| Fund unit | 5 |
| Unit | 3 |
| Warrant | 1 |
Financial statements behind the ratios
For common stocks, the payout ratio reported by our data provider is checked against the company's own financial statements (dividends paid against earnings, and the declared dividend against earnings per share). Where the two conflict, we show N/A rather than either figure.
| Measure | Common stocks | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Payout ratio confirmed by the statements | 1522 | 84.4% |
| Payout ratio conflicts with the statements (shown as N/A) | 228 | 12.6% |
| Not enough data to check (shown as N/A) | 53 | 2.9% |
| With free cash flow from the statements | 1662 | 92.2% |
A security without a figure shows "N/A" rather than zero. Securities without a yield include funds and companies whose only recent payments were one-off specials, or that have paid nothing in the last 12 months (see the methodology).
Open automated checks
Each refresh runs automated checks on the data. A check that finds a problem opens a flag; the flag closes on its own once a later refresh no longer finds the problem. Flags marked "Withheld" keep the security out of ranked lists and generated articles until resolved. 4517 flags were resolved in the last 30 days.

- Oct 16, 2026 · /methodology: Dividend growth rates, increase streaks and the S.A.F.E. checks are now calculated one way everywhere, exclude one-off special payments, and detect dividend suspensions; previously a stock page and the screener could show different results for the same company.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /high-yield-dividend-stocks/: Securities whose high yield rests on a single payment after years without dividends (INDV, THRM, YB) are withheld from ranked lists and articles until a second payment confirms the rate.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /methodology: Payout ratios that our data provider reported as 0% for dividend payers, or that conflict with the companies' financial statements, are now shown as N/A instead of the provider's figure (about 350 securities).
Each payout ratio is now checked against dividends paid and net income from the financial statements, and against the declared dividend and earnings per share. - Oct 16, 2026 · /stock/CTVA: Corrected yields that were distorted by corporate actions: CTVA (spin-off; yield now withheld until a dividend is declared on the new basis), QGEN (capital returns read as dividends; 5.98% corrected to 0.76%) and TRUX (a stock split recorded twice; 0.88% corrected to 3.52%).
Spin-off price adjustments are no longer treated as share splits, and a split filed twice by our data provider is counted once. - Oct 16, 2026 · /safe-dividend-stocks/: Topic pages that describe U.S.-listed common stocks listed OTC, ADR, Toronto-listed and preferred or debt securities; their filters now match the description.
Affected: safe, high-yield, monthly, dividend-growth, REIT, BDC, bank and utility dividend stock pages. A payout ratio reported as 0% (missing data) no longer passes payout filters. - Oct 16, 2026 · /data-sources: The Data Sources page said prices were real-time or delayed about 20 minutes and that insider-trading data was shown; prices are refreshed once a day and no insider data is collected.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /articles/the-safest-dividend-stocks-by-our-s-a-f-e-read: A curated list titled by our S.A.F.E. checks included names that did not pass them; it now lists only securities that pass all four checks.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /about: The About and Editorial Policy pages said the site carried no sponsored content; it shows display advertising and a Finviz affiliate link, now disclosed.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /privacy: The Privacy Policy said the site set no cookies; it sets a language cookie and keeps short-lived request logs, now described.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /articles: Corrected three notes: the effective dates of the AMT and JILL dividend increases, and the monthly rate in the JAN initiation note.
- Oct 16, 2026 · /methodology: The Methodology page described rules the system did not apply; it now describes the method as implemented and lists known limitations.
Examples: OTC listings and ETFs were said to be excluded from DividendRank but were ranked; Aristocrat and King streaks are curated, not computed; the refresh schedule was misstated. - Oct 16, 2026 · /articles: Withdrew 121 automatically generated dividend-change and new-payer notes whose figures were wrong or that fell outside our coverage rules.
Causes: per-share changes that were really stock splits or a spin-off (for example BKNG, DD, HON); changes on foreign listings driven by currency conversion; preferred shares, notes, warrants and units described as companies initiating a dividend. The generator now adjusts for splits, skips one-off payments and covers U.S.-listed common stocks only.
