A dividend is a cash payment a company makes to shareholders, usually each quarter. Dividend investors look less at rapid price swings and more at current yield (the annual payout as a % of price), payout ratio (how much of earnings is paid out — a read on safety), dividend growth (a rising payout over time), and the ex-dividend date (buy before it to receive the next payment). Dividend investing: frequently asked questions
What is dividend yield?
Dividend yield is the annual dividend expressed as a percentage of the share price. A stock paying $2.00 a year at a $50 price yields 4%. Because the price is the denominator, the yield rises when the price falls, so an unusually high yield can reflect a declining share price rather than a larger payout.
What is the ex-dividend date?
The ex-dividend date is the cutoff for a dividend. You must own the shares before the ex-dividend date to receive the upcoming payment; if you buy on or after that date, the seller keeps that payment. Our ex-dividend calendar lists the upcoming dates.
What is a dividend payout ratio?
The payout ratio is the share of a company's earnings paid out as dividends. A lower ratio leaves more room to maintain the dividend through a weaker year; a ratio above 100% means the company is paying out more than it earns. REITs and similar structures are exceptions, since they distribute most of their income by design.
What are Dividend Aristocrats and Dividend Kings?
Dividend Aristocrats have raised their dividend for at least 25 consecutive years; Dividend Kings have done so for at least 50. Both reflect a long, consistent track record, though past increases do not guarantee future payments.
How often are dividends paid?
Most U.S. companies pay dividends quarterly, or four times a year. Some pay monthly, semi-annually, or annually. To compare two stocks fairly, annualize the payment by its frequency before calculating the yield.
